A founder, a cat, and a frustration with SAS.
KoliStat builds modern tooling for clinical and tabular data work. It exists because nobody else is shipping what a working statistical programmer actually needs.
Why “KoliStat”
The name is for Koli, a big, smart, endlessly curious black cat who lives with the founder’s parents. The stylized silhouette in the logo is his.
The founder
Massimo Meneghello is a senior statistical programmer at a CRO — so the day job is exactly the kind of decades-old SAS, run next to newer tools that don’t talk to it, that KoliStat is built to handle.
KoliStat started from a simple observation: the pharma world is structurally stuck on SAS, but the SAS user experience and the SAS licensing model have not aged well. The interesting question is not how to replace SAS — it is how to give the people who still need to write and audit SAS code a modern, browser-native, DuckDB-fast environment to do it in.
The mission
Build tools that are byte-parity-correct where regulators care, fast where analysts feel it, and cheap to try for anyone who wants to evaluate them. Three principles that drive every product decision:
- Correctness over convenience. If a proc produces a different number than SAS, that is a bug, not a tradeoff.
- The browser is the runtime. WebAssembly + DuckDB make installation a relic. Editor, interpreter, and statistical engine all fit in a tab.
- Founder-led, not faceless. The buying experience and the support experience both go through the same person who writes the code.
What is the portfolio
Three products, one shared analytical core:
- KoliLang — the browser-native SAS interpreter (coming soon).
- Bedevere — the tabular data visualizer and SQL editor.
- the-stats-duck — the open-source DuckDB extension that supplies the statistics.
